Procedure for Assisting Students with Temporary Impairments
- Student Responsibilities:
-
- If the duration of your impairment is expected to be short-term, please attempt to work out obtaining appropriate classroom accommodations with your instructors. Sample statements to use when dealing with instructors:
- I have a temporary impairment expected to last for ___ number of weeks. I would like to ask if you could help me in obtaining appropriate classroom accommodations. Using the example of a dominant hand injury, appropriate accommodations might include:
- A temporary notetaker
- Taping lectures
- Extended time on tests
- Copies of overheads or notes from instructor
If you are not sure of the types of accommodations you need specific to your impairment, you may schedule an appointment to meet with a disability specialist.
- If the duration of your impairment is expected to have long-term or permanent effects, please schedule an appointment with a disability specialist to determine what classroom accommodations are appropriate and how to obtain them. Please follow all the steps in the "Procedures for Receiving Academic Accommodations" to ensure that your needs are met in an appropriate manner.
- Disability Resource Center Responsibilities:
-
- For a student with a short-term temporary impairment, meet with the student as necessary to brainstorm how the student might obtain appropriate classroom accommodations.
- For a student with a more long-term temporary impairment, follow appropriate steps in Procedures for Receiving Academic Accommodations.
