Procedure for Loan of TTY Equipment

Students who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired may prefer to use a Text teletype (TTY) machine to make telephone calls. The TTY produces a signal that is carried over regular phone lines to another TTY which interprets those signals into readable display much like a fax machine interprets its signals onto a printed page. Note: when using a TTY, there must be another TTY on the other end of the transmission for communication to take place. The Relay Service provided by the phone company will allow a TTY user to communicate with non-TTY users.

Student Responsibilities:
  1. Register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) by following appropriate DRC procedures, including providing documentation to verify disability and validate request for loan of TTY.
  2. Request use of TTY through your disability specialist.
  3. If approved, student must see disability specialist or the DRC TTY coordinator to receive equipment, instruction booklet, and carrying case and for instructions on how to use the equipment. Student must also sign an equipment release form which includes the serial numbers of equipment, approximate value, and return date for equipment. By signing, student agrees to be responsible for this equipment and its safe return.
  4. Maintain proper use and care of equipment while in your care.
  5. If you notice a malfunction in the operation of the equipment, immediately return equipment to the DRC for repair and/or replacement.
  6. Bring the equipment in to the DRC when finished or at least at the end of every semester. After the equipment is checked in by the DRC, the student may request to re-check out equipment as needed.
Disability Resource Center Responsibilities:
  1. Disability specialist will present student's request, along with documentation, to other professional staff to determine if request is an appropriate accommodation.
  2. If approved, disability specialist or the DRC TTY coordinator will check out equipment to student using forms located in book entitled "Equipment Check Out/TTY."
  3. When equipment is brought back in, the DRC makes sure the equipment is functioning properly and re-checks out equipment as appropriate.

Note: Any equipment and/or materials loaned by the DRC to students, faculty or other UGA departments, remains the property of the DRC. The DRC has the right to recall at any time, any piece of the DRC equipment which is checked out. The DRC will FLAG the student's record if equipment is returned in damaged condition or if student fails to return equipment.
