Procedure for Loan of Assistive Listening Devices

Students who are hearing impaired or experience disability-related listening difficulties may use an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) in the classroom to increase the auditory signal from the instructor without increasing surrounding noise. To use an ALD, the instructor utilizes a lapel microphone and transmitter and the student uses a receiver. Students wishing to borrow an ALD from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) should follow these procedures.

Student Responsibilities:
  1. Register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) by following appropriate DRC procedures, including providing documentation pertaining to student's hearing loss or other disability-related listening difficulty.
  2. Request use of Assistive Listening Device through your disability specialist.
  3. Arrange to meet with your disability specialist to receive equipment and related materials, and for instructions on how to use the system. Student must sign an equipment release form which includes the serial numbers of equipment, approximate value, and return date for equipment. By signing, student agrees to be responsible for this equipment and its safe return.
  4. Maintain proper use and care of equipment while in your care.
  5. Immediately return equipment to the DRC for repair and/or replacement if you notice a malfunction in the operation of the equipment.
  6. Bring the equipment in to the DRC when finished or at least at the end of every semester. After the equipment is examined and found to be functioning properly, the student may request to re-check out equipment if needed.
Disability Resource Center Responsibilities:
  1. Disability specialist will present student's request, along with documentation, to other professional staff to determine if request is an appropriate accommodation.
  2. If approved, disability specialist will check out equipment to student.
  3. When equipment is brought back in, the DRC makes sure the equipment is functioning properly and re-checks out equipment as appropriate.

Note: Equipment and/or materials loaned by the DRC to students, faculty or other UGA departments, remains the property of the DRC. The DRC has the right to recall at any time, any piece of DRC equipment which is checked out. The DRC will FLAG the student's record if equipment is returned in damaged condition or if student fails to return equipment.
