Procedure for Request of Individualized Assistive Technology

From time to time students need to request assistive technology specific to their needs that the Disability Resource Center (DRC) does not currently have available. These needs include, but are not limited to, items such as software, hardware, or additional equipment.

Student Responsibilities:
  1. Register with the Disability Resource Center by following appropriate DRC procedures.
  2. Meet with your disability specialist regarding your needs and request for assistive technology as soon as the need is identified.
  3. Meet with your disability specialist and the DRC Coordinator of Assistive Technology to discuss possible assistive technology solutions.
  4. Follow policies and procedures for use of assistive equipment as outlined in Assistive Technology Lab Policies and Procedures.
  5. Inform DRC Coordinator of Assistive Technology of any problems with software, hardware, or other equipment used in providing accommodations located in the Assistive Technology Lab or elsewhere on campus.
Disability Resource Center Responsibilities:
  1. Disability Specialist and Coordinator of Assistive Technology will meet with student to discuss possible assistive technology solutions.
  2. Disability Specialist will present student's request, along with documentation, to other professional staff to determine if request is an appropriate accommodation.
  3. If approved, Disability Specialist will meet with the Coordinator of Assistive Technology to research options related to the use of existing equipment or the acquisition of appropriate equipment as needed.
  4. Coordinator of Assistive Technology will then be responsible for follow up of equipment acquisition. Upon receipt of equipment, the Coordinator of Assistive Technology will arrange for equipment to be set up in the appropriate location. If resources are available, the Coordinator will arrange for training on equipment.

Note: Any equipment, software and/or materials provided by the DRC to students, faculty or other UGA departments remains the property of the DRC and may not be copied or relocated for personal use.
