University of Georgia Policy on Course Substitution and Course Modification for Students with Disabilities
The University of Georgia seeks to provide students with disabilities the opportunity to participate fully in its educational programs and services. In keeping with this philosophy, it is University policy that students with documented disabilities receive reasonable accommodation by way of access to classroom information and course substitution.
The University of Georgia Disability Resource Center provides services to students with all kinds of disabilities covered in the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Students seeking accommodation of disabilities must provide documentation that meets the approved criteria established by the Disability Resource Center. These offices will determine whether or not course substitutions and course modifications are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
-
Course Modification
- When the ADA requires course modification, the Disability Resource Center will give the student a list of modifications individualized according to specific disabilities and course requirements. Such modifications may require changes in the distribution and presentation of course material and in the evaluation of academic performance. The student will meet with the instructor to discuss implementation of the modifications. The staffs of the Disability Resource Center are available to consult as needed with the responsible instructor.
-
Course Substitution
- Courses may be substituted when the documentation supports a determination that the disability precludes learning a specific subject and that modification would most likely be futile. The Disability Resource Center will notify the student's dean that one or more course substitutions are required. The student, in consultation with the approved advisor, will select substitute courses from the approved list of courses or may petition the dean for approval of alternative substitutes. In the absence of an approved list, the degree granting unit will provide a list of acceptable substitutions.
- The Disability Resource Center may advise course substitution if the responsible instructor and the student determine that modifications do not adequately accommodate the student's disability. The Disability Resource Center may also advise course substitution, after consultation with the instructor, if the student has failed or withdrawn while failing one or more courses with modifications.
Appeals of decisions at the college level on any of these matters should be directed to the Educational Affairs committee, Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Administration Building, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602-1651.
