Procedure for Obtaining Accessible Desks, Stools, Chairs, or Other Furniture-related Accommodations
- Student Responsibilities:
-
- Register with the Disability Resource Center by following appropriate DRC procedures, including providing documentation to verify disability and validate request for moving a class to an accessible location.
- Take advantage of priority registration (see priority registration note below).
- Register for classes and provide a copy of class schedule to your Disability Specialist.
- Inform your Disability Specialist as to any classroom needs involving furniture.
- Notify your Disability Specialist if accommodation is not available on the first day of class. Likewise, if an accommodation request is made after classes have begun, be sure to let your Disability Specialist know if the accommodation does not arrive.
- Contact your Disability Specialist if the accommodation is moved out of the room or becomes broken or unusable in any way.
- Disability Resource Center Responsibilities:
-
- Disability Specialist will present student's request, along with documentation, to other professional staff to determine if request is an appropriate accommodation.
- If approved, Disability Specialist will coordinate furniture-related accommodations for their assigned students through the DRC Room Accommodations Coordinator.
- If the DRC does not have the particular item needed in inventory, the Disability Specialist will work with the student and the DRC purchasing liaison to order the item or find an alternative solution.
Note: Understand that if priority registration is not taken advantage of and early notification of Disability Specialist does not occur, or if changes occur to the schedule at the last minute, then delays in the provision of accommodations could be encountered. The accommodation may not be in place the first several days of classes. In some cases it may take up to 3 months to order and secure the necessary furniture. Pre-planning is imperative.
